Engineering Challenge

Heavy low-bed transport trailers and 45-ton dump trucks operating between active mining pits and regional processing facilities faced severe bottlenecks along a 9.2 km valley corridor prone to seasonal flash flooding and subgrade shear failure. Global World Mining and Construction Limited was contracted to reconstruct the corridor to heavy industrial highway standards without halting ongoing mine logistics.

Technical Execution

1. Subgrade Replacement & Geotextile Separation

Where insitu marshy clays exhibited California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values below 4%, our earthworks fleet excavated up to 1.4 meters depth, installed high-tensile non-woven geotextile separation membranes, and backfilled with graded quarry rock fill compacted via 16-ton vibratory rollers.

2. Multi-Cell Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts

At six perennial river and stream crossings, GWMC constructed twin- and triple-cell 3.0m x 2.5m reinforced concrete box culverts using C35 sulfate-resistant concrete:

  • Temporary cofferdams and dewatering pumps maintained dry foundation excavations while preserving downstream aquatic flow.
  • Flared wingwalls, concrete aprons, and heavy wire-mesh gabion mattresses were installed upstream and downstream to prevent hydraulic scour during 1-in-50-year storm events.

3. Traffic Management & Zero-Disruption Delivery

By executing work in 1.5 km half-width stages with radio-controlled traffic marshals and solar-lit night delineation, mine haulage continued throughout the 10-month programme with zero haulage shutdowns.
