The Hidden Cost of Haul Road Failure
On an active surface gold concession in Ghana’s Western or Ashanti Region, a 2% increase in rolling resistance caused by poorly drained, rutted haul roads translates directly into a 10% to 14% reduction in truck productivity and accelerated tire and suspension wear. Worse still, washouts during peak June or October downpours can halt run-of-mine (ROM) ore delivery entirely.
At Global World Mining and Construction Limited, our civil and mining infrastructure teams approach haul road construction not as temporary dirt tracks, but as engineered heavy industrial pavements designed for 100-ton gross vehicle weights.
Three Pillars of Resilient Haul Road Design
1. Geomatics-Driven Alignment & Drainage Intercepts
Using RTK-GNSS rovers and UAV photogrammetry prior to stripping, we map natural catchment thalwegs across the concession. Rather than fighting natural drainage paths, we position reinforced concrete box culverts and rock-lined interceptor ditches at low points, keeping water away from the structural sub-base.
2. Mechanical Stabilization & Compaction Control
Tropical saprolitic clays lose up to 60% of their shear strength when saturated. We excavate low-CBR pockets, install geotextile separation layers where required, and compact graded quartzitic waste rock and high-CBR laterite in 200mm lifts to a minimum of 98% Modified AASHTO density.
3. Geometric Cross-Fall & Wearing Course Maintenance
A consistent 3.5% to 4.0% crowned cross-fall sheds surface sheet flow before it can infiltrate the wearing course, preserving hard, low-rolling-resistance running surfaces year-round.
